Detox is short for detoxification process. This occurs in a medical (hospital) setting to monitor the patient and manage withdrawal symptoms while the patient’s body is ridding itself of the drug. This admission is typically 3-7 days.
If a loved one has or is planning on going through a detox program, it is important that follow up treatment be in place. If you do take your loved one to a detox center, it is best to work with a caseworker at the detox center to receive recommendations for best level of care. Detox is not an “answer” to addiction. It is a process that is usually used before a patient (client) enters residential care.
